Kuala Lumpur will be the host venue for BIOFUELS ASIA 2008 Expo & Conference - the Premiere International Biofuels Industry Show for Asia. This event comes at a time where surging oil prices forces energy users in Asia to look at alternative sources. Today, alternative fuels are estimated to comprise only 1% of total current fuel usage in most part of Asia according to a report by Associated Press.

High oil prices coupled with the huge resources in sugar cane, palm oil and coconut among others will make Asia a major growth centre for biofuels production. Governments across Asia have activated programmes to build capacity in investments and technology to develop biofuels. Spurred on by Government incentives and tax breaks, Malaysia alone has issued 10 licenses for biofuels plants worth an estimated RM 300 million. In addition, 3 biodiesel plants will be built with an annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes of biodiesel with a cost of RM 120 million.

In addition, biofuels has proven to be more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels. For example, ethanol produces 13% less greenhouse gases and reduces carbon emission by 78% according to the US Agricultural Department. Biofuels is also viewed as a sustainable and renewal energy source where countries can be assured of supply. It is not surprising that biofuels is promoted as the best alternative for petrol and diesel.
